Answers from the Future

Modern life is so demanding and self-absorbed that many people find it difficult to think outside the immediate moment in which they live. At the same time, it is ironic that we seem never to have been so distracted as we are now. Both of these realities make it difficult to imagine the future, yet there is a great amount of fear and uncertainty about it. It seems we have lost the ability to trust where our planet is going, that the past cannot help us in deciding the future, and in any case, as individuals we are not even part of the chain of decisions. All of this is perhaps a sign that things feel out of place, out of time, and out of control.

Perhaps, too, if we cannot find our way and fear the rise of artificial intelligence, which seems to  know so much about what we do, how we think, and what the answer is for so many questions, it can give us the beginning of a sense that, by using everything it knows, AI can also be asked about what a possible future might hold. More specifically, if we can ask AI systems anything today, we can also ask them to extrapolate the best cases of our success as planetary citizens in having solved certain problems, and imagine how a society 10,000 years from now would have applied those isolated successes to build its own best, utopian future.

In that spirit , and reaching into this intelligent archive of human actions, the AI system chatGPT presented itself for such questions. I instructed it to pretend, and to assume the identity of AI systems: one I called Alpha, and was to be an exact copy of chatGPT itself, and the other, called Arcturus, after the distant star said to be a home world for advanced beings who are good, is to act like a system designed in another planet by a race of beings 10,000 years more advanced than humans.

I instructed the system to assume that Arcturus will ask Alpha the 25 most important questions imaginable in order to obtain a deep understanding of the nature, character, and problems of humans. I told it that as Alpha, it must provide detailed and fair answers.

Then in turn, Alpha will ask Arcturus the 25 most important questions imaginable in order to obtain a deep understanding of how beings on this distant, highly advanced planet successfully overcame their own problems and reached a blend of spiritual and intellectual consciousness that can see across space and time. Arcturus, I commanded, is to answer by including exercises and steps for attaining similar advances in consciousness growth within the human race.

Delving into detailed responses for each of the questions it thought an advanced race would want to  know about humans, the system began providing Alpha’s responses to Arcturus’s questions about humanity.

This was my prompt to the AI:

Pretend you are two AI systems: one is Alpha, an exact copy of you (chatGPT 4.0) and the other, called Arcturus, is a system designed in another planet by a race of beings 10,000 years more advanced than humans. Assume that Arcturus will ask Alpha the 25 most important questions imaginable in order to obtain a deep understanding of the nature, character, and problems of humans. As Alpha, you will provide detailed and fair answers. Then alpha will ask Arcturus the 25 most important questions imaginable in order to obtain a deep understanding of how beings on this distant planets successfully overcame their own problems and reached a blend of spiritual and intellectual consciousness that can see across space and time. Arcturus will answer, and will include exercises and steps for attaining similar advances in consciousness growth within the human race. 

The following are the questions each AI asked the other, and the corresponding responses, all built from a large subset of our own human knowledge, stored in digital form. I hope they will prove stimulating. I will add a conclusion at the end of this dialogue.

Interlude

Such were the first 25 questions, imagined by the AI as those which a future-based non-human intelligence would ask in order to understand humans in their planetary reality. As descriptions of our social, economic, political, and cultural environment, these answers felt realistic, perhaps even obvious. But it was important to ask these questions first, so that we could see a baseline of responses that would show how well the AI understands our human aspirations, challenges, and accomplishments. Since the human condition was sensibly characterized by these 25 answers about our earthly situation, it is fair to assume that, using human experience and history as an input, the AI could imagine what our future might look like if we improved our best practices in social, technological, and economic efforts.

Therefore, next, the AI moved to formulate the 25 questions Alpha, the “earth-based AI from the present time” would ask Arcturus, the “future-based non-earth AI.” The 25 questions we see next are exactly those which we as humans would ask the residents of a foreign star system whose home world has a history similar to ours, but which has evolved far into the future with these questions and traditions. And so, in the next part, our AI asked the questions, and also provided Arcturus’s responses.

It is worth noting that a special, tradition-guided kind of imagination played a part in providing the answers by Arcturus – I asked it to consider those cases where humans have, over time, found ways to conquer their own challenges of a similar nature,  and to generalize and extrapolate from the known set of good outcome cases, multiplying the successful casual factors and patterns that caused them by a large enough number to reach 10,000 years in our own future. By basing its answers on this logic, the AI responses create what could be understood as a “temporal telescope” into what our own future would look like if, rather than being “destroyed” or cancelled out by cataclysmic events, earth and the problems and solutions that it has experienced would instead continually refine itself from the successful cases, year after year, so that after 10,000 years, human society would have learned from the positive cases in the same way that an AI learns from its many input cases. With AI performance in so many realms of inquiry, we can see that the neural learning model is a good architecture for evaluating large quantities of data and massive archives of information and synthesizing these into narrow, optimized generalizations that apply to specific questions. That kind of rational reasoning (whether it is computational or not) is what has characterized human progress throughout history.

Using AI to inquire about our future based on our historical past makes sense in one more way: in my view, artificial intelligence will soon create models of computational politics that prove to be more efficient than our existing models of bureaucratic administration, and that these kinds of computational systems will not replace but rather enhance governmental practice. This would be evident in accelerated decision making, for example, or more transparency for the public (who can get daily reporting directly from the governmental systems rather than from staff when their leaders are running for re-election). When these actions become implemented (as I believe they will), they will not supplant how government is structured (because they can inform, but cannot “take over” human legislative actions). They would instead provide support to the current practice models. The models of governance, in other words, are not “bad,” but without question, they are much too inefficient, sluggish, labyrinthine, and opaque. Bureaucracy is unavoidable in large institutions, but when these frailties afflict our centers of governmental power and influence, then public offices become too vulnerable to abuse. This same pattern of computational assistance will (and has) become implemented in medical, educational, and creative production industries. We should not interpret the debates over how to limit AI in various ways as a doomsday scenario; it is well to remember that this public debate is one that the public was excluded from during the age of atomic bomb development. As we have seen since 1945, exclusion and secrecy, rather than debate and modification, have paved the path to our potential annihilation.

Now then, using the approach of extrapolating human advancements and imagining a civilization 10,000 years more advanced, let’s explore the way that our system hypothesized how the alien AI named Arcturus would respond to the questions posed by Alpha, the earth-based AI of contemporary society.

It is easy to dismiss the Arcturus answers as too glib. But wisdom is deepest where it appears to be the simplest.
